At 45 years old, I find myself embarking on a new professional journey—one that is both exciting and challenging. After spending more than 20 years working in the legal field as a legal assistant and in various legal support roles, I have decided to take the next step in my career by pursuing my Paralegal certification and preparing to sit for the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE®).
For many people, midlife can feel like a time to settle into what is comfortable and familiar. For me, it has become a time of growth, purpose, and proving to myself that there is always room to learn, achieve, and evolve.
My journey has not been a straight path. For years, I had a dream of attending law school and becoming an attorney. That dream was one of the reasons I pursued my Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Criminology, which I proudly earned in 2020 while working full-time. Going back to school as an adult was not easy. There were nights when I completed assignments after a full day of work, weekends spent studying instead of relaxing, and moments when exhaustion made me question whether I could keep going.
But I did.
Earning my degree was one of the proudest accomplishments of my life. It taught me that perseverance can overcome obstacles that seem impossible at first.
As graduation approached, I began seriously considering law school. However, life has a way of redirecting our plans. Between the time commitment, financial investment, and other obstacles that arose, I realized that law school was not the right path for me at that stage of my life.
At first, that realization was disappointing. After investing so much time and effort into preparing for that goal, it felt like I was walking away from a dream. But over time, I came to understand that changing direction is not the same as giving up.
Instead, I chose a path that honors both my experience and my future.
For more than two decades, I have worked alongside legal professionals, managed case files, communicated with clients, prepared legal documents, and supported attorneys through countless matters. The legal field has been my career, my passion, and a significant part of my identity. Pursuing paralegal certification and preparing for the PACE exam allows me to build upon that foundation while continuing to challenge myself professionally.
Preparing for the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE®) exam while working full-time has required discipline and determination. There are days when the last thing I want to do after work is open another book or review legal concepts. Yet I remind myself that every chapter I read and every practice question I answer is an investment in my future.
One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that success doesn’t always look the way we originally imagined it would. Sometimes our goals evolve. Sometimes the road changes direction. What matters is having the courage to keep moving forward.
Today, I no longer view my decision not to attend law school as a failure. Instead, I see it as a pivot—a choice that allowed me to pursue a path that aligns with my experience, my goals, and the life I want to create.
For anyone considering a career change, a certification, or returning to school later in life, I want you to know this: It is never too late.
Your dreams may change. Your plans may evolve. Obstacles may force you to rethink your next step.
But growth doesn’t have an expiration date.
At 45, I am still learning. I am still growing. I am still setting new goals and pursuing them with determination.
And I’m just getting started.
