For years, I rolled my eyes every time I heard that phrase.
I thought self-care was something people did when they had extra time. As a woman juggling responsibilities, family obligations, work, and the never-ending to-do list, taking time for myself felt selfish.
There was always something more important to do.
Laundry needed folding.
Emails needed answering.
Someone needed my help.
And if I happened to have a free moment, I usually spent it catching up on something productive instead of resting.
Eventually, my body and mind started sending warning signs.
I was exhausted.
I was irritable.
I struggled to focus.
The smallest inconveniences felt overwhelming.
One evening, after an especially long day, I sat on my porch with a cup of hot tea. The sun was beginning to set, the air was cool, and for the first time in weeks, I wasn’t rushing anywhere.
It was only fifteen minutes.
But in those fifteen minutes, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time:
Peace.
That simple moment taught me something important.

What Self-Care Really Looks Like
When people hear the phrase “self-care,” they often picture luxury vacations, expensive spa treatments, or elaborate wellness routines.
The truth is much simpler.
Self-care often looks like:
- Going to bed thirty minutes earlier.
- Drinking enough water throughout the day.
- Taking a walk while listening to your favorite music.
- Reading a chapter of a book instead of scrolling social media.
- Saying “no” without apologizing.
- Spending quiet time with God.
- Sitting on the porch with a warm cup of tea and your thoughts.
The beauty of self-care is that it doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated.
