    That morning started like any other.

    The sun filtered through the windows as I got ready for work, moving through the familiar routine that Wilbur and I had shared for years. I grabbed his morning medicine and tucked it inside a piece of Oscar Mayer cheese—the same treat that always made his ears perk up and his tail wag.

    But something felt different.

    Instead of settling into one of his favorite spots for a morning nap, Wilbur followed me from room to room. His nails clicked softly across the hardwood floors as he trailed behind me, panting. Every few minutes he would lie down, only to get back up again moments later. No position seemed comfortable. No room seemed right unless I was in it.

    At the time, I didn’t realize those would be some of our final hours together.

    A few hours later, on July 27, 2022, my beloved Wilbur took his last breath in my arms, with my mom and grandmother by my side.

    A Beginning Filled with Love

    The day we brought Wilbur home in 2009.

    Wilbur was my canine soulmate for 13 wonderful years.

    He came into my life on a warm September day in 2009. My ex-husband and I drove more than an hour to pick up a Scottish Terrier puppy from a breeder who was going out of business.     Despite his stubborn streak, he had a gentle spirit. He welcomed affection from children and strangers alike and never seemed to meet a person who wasn’t a potential friend.

    His sweet nature made it impossible not to love him.

    The Beginning of Goodbye

    For most of his life, Wilbur was healthy.

    As he entered his senior years, however, I began noticing subtle changes. He moved a little slower. His legs weren’t quite as strong. The energetic dog who once explored every corner of the yard became content to nap almost anywhere—sometimes in positions that seemed impossible to be comfortable.

    Then I noticed something more concerning.

    His belly began to swell.

    His eating habits hadn’t changed, so I knew something wasn’t right. Soon after, his breathing became more labored, and I scheduled a veterinary appointment.

    The weeks that followed were filled with uncertainty and difficult decisions.

    Eventually, Wilbur was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. At first, the condition seemed manageable. Then doctors discovered a tumor that needed to be removed.

    The surgery itself went well.

    A few days later, Wilbur came home, and I set up camp beside him on the couch. For nights, I slept nearby so I could hear every movement and make sure he was comfortable. His veterinarian assured me that many dogs his age continued living happy lives for another year or two after similar procedures.

    I held onto that hope.

    Unfortunately, life had other plans.

    Only a week or two after surgery, Wilbur suddenly collapsed in my arms.

    Panic took over as I rushed him to the veterinarian. They immediately began treatment, connected IVs, and performed X-rays. The images revealed a significant amount of fluid around his lungs, and we were quickly transferred to a 24-hour emergency animal hospital.

    Hours later, after several liters of fluid had been drained, we were finally able to bring him home.

    For the next two days, we stayed together on the couch, wrapped in blankets and hope.

    Then Monday arrived.

    Wilbur wouldn’t eat.

    For a dog who loved food as much as he did, that alone told me everything.

    He followed me everywhere that morning. Every step I took, he took too. Looking back now, I wonder if he knew his time was near and simply wanted to spend those final hours close to me.

    A few hours later, while I held him in my arms, Wilbur peacefully slipped away.

    Around noon on July 27, 2022, my best friend crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

    Learning to Live with Loss

    In the days that followed, grief arrived in waves.

    One moment I would feel numb. The next, I would find myself crying because I heard a sound that reminded me of him or glanced toward the spot where he always slept.

    Like many grieving pet owners, I questioned every decision.

    Had I done enough?

    Had I waited too long?

    Had I somehow asked too much of him?

    Those questions lingered because love often leaves us searching for answers that don’t exist.
